I went on a mission trip to Honduras in June of 2003. There were 18 of
us consisting of teenagers through seniors citizens. What a wonderful mix of
experience and determination. Some taught bible study , others did construction,
while others provided crafts and recreation. I was the photographer for the group
and we visited many of the poor up on the mountain. I can not tell you how hard it
was to walk straight upward for what seemed like many miles in the hot sun. Many
children walk up and down the mountain daily just to attend the daycare. They carry
heavy jugs of water up the mountain , because they have no running water. Many have
never been in a car or eaten at a fast food restaurant. These are things we take for
granted.
One night we had saved pizza scraps for the starving dogs on the streets and ended
up giving it to a street kid who was sleeping under a bank ledge in the pouring rain.
His smile was unforgettable and he was as grateful as I had ever seen anyone in my
life.
Mothers often leave children unattended while they try to work fulltime for less
than $100's a month. This is why the daycare first started. Barbara, the founder was
witness to infants being left in the care of 3 year olds while mom tried to work.
As of June 2003 , there are 138 kids in her care and hundreds of others in need. The
daycare runs solely on donations . It takes only $25's a month to sponsor a child.
I am the General Manager of a McDonald's restaurant and my crew and I sponsor two
children.
What I learned is to be grateful, be helpful and deliver a message of hope from GOD.
I wanted to be a voice for them through my photo's and maybe start a spark for
others to help in any way they can.
